New Direction

I seem to have recently been spending an inordinate amount of time lobbing things into water and filming/photographing the results. In reality, up to this point I’ve spent more time cobbling together a collection of bit’s and bobs to make it possible, the actual lobbing is really only starting to take over. (And trust me, when I say “cobbling together” I mean it. This is isn’t the sort of set up you see in those behind the scenes sequences of David Attenborough’s latest blockbuster.)

I’ve always been more drawn to creating “organic” imagery as opposed to full on wunderkind cgi, I guess it comes from a lifelong obsession with trying to recreate the slide and cartridge based projection shows that mesmerized me as a teenager.

What started with a single request to create some ambient screen visuals has opened something of a floodgate of creativity and experimentation.

As ever, the trusty notebooks are close at hand, although now less pages of ideas for lighting layouts, more pages of scribbled formulas for the best ways to water down or thicken up various inks and paints, relative quantities of alcohol to baby oil (it’s very important to get that one right!) and what to drop into what container.

As it’s developed, the idea is now to eventually get to a stage where as well as creating commercially available video loops, still could be sold as prints (after having a minor “I’d quite like to hang that on my wall” epiphany)

As always, if any of this interests you, drop me a line, whether for collaboration or patronage.

More to come.
